SUMMARY:The Geography of Symplectic 4-Manifolds
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium \nSpeaker: Anar Akhmedov\, University of Minnesota \nTitle: The Geography of Symplectic 4-Manifolds \nAbstract: The symplectic geography problem\, originally posed by J. McCarthy-J. Wolfson and R. Gompf\, asks which ordered pairs of nonnegative integers are realized as (\chi(X)\,c_1^2(X)) for a symplectic 4-manifold X\, where \chi(X)=(e(X)+\sigma(X))/4. In this talk\, we will address the geography of simply connected spin and nonspin symplectic 4-manifolds with small Euler characteristic\, with nonnegative signature\, or near the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line c_1^2(X)=9\chi_h(X). We will also discuss recent developments\, including joint work with Sai-Kee Yeung on symplectic fake quadrics and related questions motivated by fake projective planes and Cartwright-Steger surfaces. \n  \n\nTo subscribe or unsubscribe to the colloquium mailing list\, please visit this link.

SUMMARY:Extreme Diffusion
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium \nSpeaker: Ivan Corwin (Columbia University) \nTitle: Extreme Diffusion \nAbstract: Two hundred years ago\, Robert Brown observed the statistics of the motion of grains of pollen in water. It took almost one hundred years for Einstein and others to develop an effective theory describing this motion as that of a random walker. In this talk\, I will challenge a key implication of this well established theory. When studying systems with very large numbers of particles diffusing together\, I will argue that the Einstein random walk theory breaks down when it comes to predicting the statistical behavior of extreme particles—those that move the fastest and furthest in the system. In its place\, I will describe a new theory of extreme diffusion which captures the effect of the hidden environment in which particles diffuse together and allows us to interrogate that environment by studying extreme particles. I will highlight one piece of mathematics that led us to develop this theory—a non-commutative binomial theorem—and hint at other connections to integrable probability\, quantum integrable systems and stochastic PDEs. \n  \n\nTo subscribe or unsubscribe to the colloquium mailing list\, please visit this link.

SUMMARY:Snake graphs and q-deformed real numbers
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium \nSpeaker: James Propp (UMass Lowell) \nTitle: Snake graphs and q-deformed real numbers \nAbstract: I’ll present a statistical-mechanical construction of q-deformed real numbers [[x]]_q\, inspired by the q-deformed rational numbers [x]_q of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko. The new construction admits two equivalent formulations: one in terms of random filters in snake posets and the other in terms of random dimer covers of snake graphs. \nI’ll begin with a combinatorial approach to Stern’s diatomic series and the Calkin–Wilf bijection via finite snake graphs\, and then construct q-deformed rational numbers by introducing an activity parameter q into the model. I extend from q-deformed rationals to q-deformed reals by passing from finite to infinite snake graphs; the main technical step is to show that the associated limiting probability measures are well defined. \nThe resulting q-deformation [[x]]_q satisfies [[x]]_1 = x for all x>0. There’s evidence that\, wherever both [x]_q and [[x]]_q are defined\, [[x]]_q = q [x]_q. For more details\, see arXiv:2607.14332. \n  \n\nTo subscribe or unsubscribe to the colloquium mailing list\, please visit this link.
