SUMMARY:From Random Walks to the Free Quantum Field
DESCRIPTION:Joint Math/CMSA Geometry and Quantum Theory Seminar \nSpeaker: Bowen Yang \nTitle: From Random Walks to the Free Quantum Field \nAbstract: The free quantum field is\, heuristically\, a Gaussian measure with density exp(−S_E) on a space of fields. We make this precise by building the Gaussian free field from discrete objects: random walks\, Brownian motion\, and the GFF on a lattice. Along the way we see why its covariance is a Green’s function\, and why in dimension two and higher it exists only as a distribution. We then pass to the continuum free field of Chatterjee’s Chapter 3 and its Markov property in time. We close with a tour of how this gives the quantum theory\, the Feynman propagator\, and the Wightman functions. \n

SUMMARY:Geometry and Quantum Theory Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Joint Math/CMSA Geometry and Quantum Theory Seminar\n \n\nSpeaker: Dan Freed\, Harvard \nTitle: Path integral quantization of particles via probability (Part 2) \nAbstract: I will pick up where I left off last week.  The first half of the lecture will cover the general strategy of constructing a quantum system using Markov processes\, as described in Section 2.1 of Chatterjee’s book.  Then I will follow his Chapter 1 to apply it to a particle on the line with a potential. \n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Path integral quantization of particles via probability
DESCRIPTION:Joint Math/CMSA Geometry and Quantum Theory Seminar \nSpeaker: Dan Freed \nTitle: Path integral quantization of particles via probability \nAbstract: This is the beginning of our study of Sourav Chatterjee’s Gauge Theory Lecture Notes\, a book-in-progress.  This lecture follows Chapter 1\, which covers the path integral quantization of a single particle.  We begin in real time with the free particle and then move on to the Wick rotated version with a potential.  The idea is to introduce probabilistic methods in this construction. \n

SUMMARY:Quasi-local algebras and invertible phases of matter
DESCRIPTION:Geometry and Quantum Theory Seminar \nSpeaker: Nikita Sopenko\, CMSA \nTitle: Quasi-local algebras and invertible phases of matter \nAbstract: In the algebraic approach to quantum field theory\, observables localized in bounded regions form a net of von Neumann algebras generating what is known as a quasi-local algebra. I will discuss the classification of quasi-local algebras under a notion of equivalence that generalizes Brauer equivalence and captures only large-scale properties. I will argue that this problem coincides with the classification of invertible phases of lattice systems in one dimension higher\, providing a way to relate quantum field-theoretic and microscopic descriptions. As a byproduct\, I will describe a candidate for the generalized cohomology theory associated with invertible phases\, as conjectured by Kitaev.
