SUMMARY:The Geography of Symplectic 4-Manifolds
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium \nSpeaker: Anar Akhmedov\, University of Minnesota \nTitle: The Geography of Symplectic 4-Manifolds \nAbstract: The symplectic geography problem\, originally posed by J. McCarthy-J. Wolfson and R. Gompf\, asks which ordered pairs of nonnegative integers are realized as (\chi(X)\,c_1^2(X)) for a symplectic 4-manifold X\, where \chi(X)=(e(X)+\sigma(X))/4. In this talk\, we will address the geography of simply connected spin and nonspin symplectic 4-manifolds with small Euler characteristic\, with nonnegative signature\, or near the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line c_1^2(X)=9\chi_h(X). We will also discuss recent developments\, including joint work with Sai-Kee Yeung on symplectic fake quadrics and related questions motivated by fake projective planes and Cartwright-Steger surfaces. \n  \n\nTo subscribe or unsubscribe to the colloquium mailing list\, please visit this link.

SUMMARY:A Rigorous Construction of the Free Quantum Field
DESCRIPTION:Joint Math/CMSA Geometry and Quantum Theory Seminar \nSpeaker: Kason Kunkelmann\, Harvard \nTitle: A Rigorous Construction of the Free Quantum Field \nAbstract: In this talk we will build on last week’s discrete intuition and rigorously construct our first continuum quantum field theory: the free field. Following Chapter three of Chatterjee’s notes\, we will realize it as a Gaussian random field in Euclidean spacetime\, prove that it has the Markov property in time\, and then use the procedure outlined in previous lectures to get its Hilbert space and Hamiltonian.

SUMMARY:The IEANTN Project: Automation and Mathematical Understanding
DESCRIPTION:New Technologies in Mathematics Seminar \nSpeaker: Xinjie He\, UCLA \nTitle: The IEANTN Project: Automation and Mathematical Understanding \nAbstract: Explicit analytic number theory combines conceptual arguments with extensive bookkeeping and numerical computation\, often drawing on long chains of results across many papers. The Integrated Explicit Analytic Number Theory Network (IEANTN) aims to organize this literature into a living network whose dependencies and supporting evidence are explicit. \nIn this talk\, I will discuss how we redesigned IEANTN from its 1.0 version\, which put everything in a single Lean repository that was hard to maintain and rebuild as auto-formalization produces increasingly large proofs\, to its current 2.0 version\, which solves this problem by separating readable mathematical statements from verified proofs and recording different levels of justification. \nFinally\, I will discuss what we hope to automate and what we want to understand ourselves. By organizing the literature into a network\, we hope to make the mathematical ideas and relationships easier to see\, and leave the detailed bookkeeping to machines. \n

SUMMARY:CMSA/Tsinghua Math-Science Literature Lecture: Peng Shan\, Tsinghua University
DESCRIPTION:CMSA/Tsinghua Math-Science Literature Lecture \nDate: Thursday\, October 29\, 2026 \nTime: 9:00 – 10:30 am ET \nLocation: online via Zoom Webinar \n  \nPlease register to attend.  \nZoom Webinar registration \n  \nSpeaker: Peng Shan\, Tsinghua University \nTitle: Bridging affine vertex algebras and affine Springer fibres \nAbstract: In this talk\, I would like to explain a program which aims to build relationships between affine Springer theory and representations of simple affine vertex algebras. We will discuss some explicit correspondences for admissible levels\, and formulate some new conjectures about representations of simple affine vertex algebras at nonadmissible levels and their associated varieties. This is based on joint work with Dan Xie\, Wenbin Yan and Qixian Zhao. \n  \n \n  \nOrganizers: Dan Freed\, Harvard Math & CMSA and Shing-Tung Yau\, Tsinghua University \n  \n\nBeginning in Spring 2020\, the CMSA began hosting a lecture series on literature in the mathematical sciences\, with a focus on significant developments in mathematics that have influenced the discipline\, and the lifetime accomplishments of significant scholars. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Poincaré Duality in Quantum Error-Correcting Codes
DESCRIPTION:Member Seminar \nSpeaker: Bowen Yang \nTitle: Poincaré Duality in Quantum Error-Correcting Codes \nAbstract: Quantum information is fragile\, and one of the main tools for protecting it is a family of error-correcting codes called stabilizer codes. These codes have a second life as exactly solvable models of quantum matter: the code space is the vacuum state and the “syndromes” behave like excitations that can move freely\, get stuck in place\, or wind around one another. I will show how a little homological algebra packages these excitations into clean mathematical objects\, which we call charge modules. Moreover\, there are natural pairing between different charge modules of complementary degrees sometimes called “braiding”. They actually came from the Poincare duality of the sphere. This is joint work with Błażej Ruba. \n

SUMMARY:Doing Mathematics with AI Agents
DESCRIPTION:Doing Mathematics with AI Agents \nDate: Saturday\, October 31\, 2026 \nTime: 9:00–5:00 pm ET \nLocation:  Zimmer Hall (Science Center)\, 1 Oxford Street\, Cambridge MA \nThis is a one day workshop for Boston-area mathematics faculty to work with AI agents in a collaborative environment (designed by Andrew Sutherland) supported by computational infrastructure and formalization tools. This event is appropriate for: \n\nfaculty who haven’t used AI seriously in their work and want to try\nfaculty who have only worked with AI in chat in a web browser\nfaculty who already use Codex or Claude Code\n\nParticipants will work in a system where they can work with multiple agents\, and do mathematics assisted by AI agents during the day of the workshop. Participants will work with AI agents who are fully set up to do mathematics\, and will talk to other colleagues who are doing the same thing in real time. The landscape of using AI agents in mathematics is changing incredibly quickly. At this workshop\, participants can experiment and learn from others about the possibilities and challenges in what is currently available. \nOnly faculty are eligible for this event. We will hold another workshop on November 21 for postdocs that will have a separate application. \nNo funding is available. We expect participants to be local. \nApply here if you are interested to participate. Space is very limited. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis starting October 21. \nLink to application: https://forms.gle/4beWqoW9VeSCDD3K8 \n  \nOrganizers: Melanie Matchett Wood (Harvard) and Andrew Sutherland (MIT) \n\nThis event is cosponsored by the Harvard Mathematics Department and the CMSA. \n
