SUMMARY:Snake graphs and q-deformed real numbers
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium \nSpeaker: James Propp (UMass Lowell) \nTitle: Snake graphs and q-deformed real numbers \nAbstract: I’ll present a statistical-mechanical construction of q-deformed real numbers [[x]]_q\, inspired by the q-deformed rational numbers [x]_q of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko. The new construction admits two equivalent formulations: one in terms of random filters in snake posets and the other in terms of random dimer covers of snake graphs. \nI’ll begin with a combinatorial approach to Stern’s diatomic series and the Calkin–Wilf bijection via finite snake graphs\, and then construct q-deformed rational numbers by introducing an activity parameter q into the model. I extend from q-deformed rationals to q-deformed reals by passing from finite to infinite snake graphs; the main technical step is to show that the associated limiting probability measures are well defined. \nThe resulting q-deformation [[x]]_q satisfies [[x]]_1 = x for all x>0. There’s evidence that\, wherever both [x]_q and [[x]]_q are defined\, [[x]]_q = q [x]_q. For more details\, see arXiv:2607.14332. \n  \n\nTo subscribe or unsubscribe to the colloquium mailing list\, please visit this link.

SUMMARY:Mathematical Economics Seminar: Experimental Design in Networks
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Christopher Harshaw (c.harshaw@columbia.edu)\, Columbia University \nTitle: Design-Based Minimax Theory for Network Experiments \nAbstract: Network experiments are used throughout the social and medical sciences to investigate causal effects under the presence of interference. While a large body of work has developed improved statistical procedures\, the fundamental limits of statistical estimation in these settings is less well understood. In this paper\, we develop and investigate a design-based theory of minimax risk for network experiments under an arbitrary neighborhood interference model. Our notion of minimax risk describes the optimal precision among all statistical procedures for investigating a particular causal effect on the observed interference network. We show that the minimax risk is a function of the corresponding conflict graph\, which captures inherent unobservability of estimand-relevant potential outcomes given the observed interference network. Our main contribution is a series of upper and lower bounds on the minimax rate in terms of local and global connectivity properties of the conflict graph. To illustrate their utility\, we apply these general results to obtain minimax analyses for two commonly studied effects: the direct treatment effect and global average treatment effect. \n  \nSpeaker: Evan Munro (evan.munro@chicagobooth.edu)\, University of Chicago\, Booth School of Business \nTitle: Robust Signal Maximization in Spillover Experiments \nAbstract: We study the optimal design and analysis of experiments for estimating spillover effects. Assuming a known (e.g.\, linear) exposure mapping\, we characterize the treatment-assignment distribution and regression-based estimator that minimize worst-case asymptotic variance against a broad class of distributions of unobservables. The design problem yields an intuitive solution in which the planner trades off spillover signal strength against diffusion of spillover variation. The analysis problem yields a simple recentered instrumental variable estimator to best leverage this variation. This framework produces natural solutions in several benchmark cases – such as clustered exposure – and suggests computationally tractable approximations for general networks\, including bipartite settings. We illustrate these new tools in semi-synthetic experiments based on two applications from development economics. Our approach yields large standard error reductions in both experiments\, increasing effective sample sizes by 50-100% or more.

SUMMARY:Unitary extended topological field theories and higher Hermitian objects
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium \nSpeaker: Lukas Müller (LMU Munich) \nTitle: Unitary extended topological field theories and higher Hermitian objects \nAbstract: Mathematically\, topological field theories study the representation theory of manifolds undercutting and gluing. Extended topological field theories take this idea a step further by allowing one to cut manifolds in multiple directions\, leading to a formulation in terms of higher category theory. It is an open problem to give a complete definition and description of unitary representations of manifolds as extended topological field theories. \nIn my talk\, I will explain some recent progress towards the definition and classification of unitary extended topological field theories. This is based on a categorification of the concept of a Hermitian object in a rigid symmetric monoidal category\, introduced by Freed and Hopkins in the study of non-extended unitary topological field theories. \nThe talk is based on several joint works involving (in part) Giovanni Ferrer\, Brett Hungar\, Theo Johnson-Freyd\, Cameron Krulewski\, Nivedita\, David Penneys\, David Reutter\, Claudia Scheimbauer\, Luuk Stehouwer\, and Chetan Vuppulury\, as well as ongoing work with Theo Johnson-Freyd\, Cameron Krulewski\, and Luuk Stehouwer. \n  \n  \n\nTo subscribe or unsubscribe to the colloquium mailing list\, please visit this link.

I will describe a general pushforward theorem producing relative shifted symplectic forms and will explain explicit techniques for computing such forms. As an application I will describe a universal construction of Poisson structures on derived moduli of Stokes data on smooth varieties and will explain how symplectic leaves arise from fixing irregular types and local formal monodromies at infinity. This is a joint work with Dima Arinkin and Bertrand Toen. \n11:15 – 11:30 am\nBreak \n11:30 am – 12:00 pm\nAzelie Picot\, Columbia\nTitle: The cobordism category for Poincaré Duality spaces\nAbstract: Cobordism categories conveniently package closed manifolds of a given dimension as objects and moduli spaces of their cobordisms as morphisms. On the other hand\, Poincaré duality spaces are spaces whose homology satisfies Poincaré duality. We can again define a cobordism category for Poincaré duality spaces. In this talk\, I will discuss some of its key features. \n12:00 – 1:30 pm\nBreak \n1:30 – 2:00 pm\nConnor Malin\, MPIM Bonn\ntba \n2:00 – 2:15 pm\nBreak \n2:15 – 3:15 pm\nBrian Williams\, Boston University\nTitle: Higher central charges and a universal Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch theorem\nAbstract: Mumford’s computation of determinant line bundles in CFT relates the Virasoro central charge to the geometry of moduli spaces of curves. In joint work with Zhengping Gui\, we prove a local\, universal Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch theorem extending this relationship to higher dimensions. Our categorical starting point is the functorial construction of Tate complexes from derived sections of natural bundles on punctured formal disks. We compute the induced central extension of global derived vector fields in terms of the Todd class and Chern character\, connecting categorical determinant constructions with higher Virasoro symmetries and anomalies in holomorphic QFT. \n3:15 – 3:30 pm\nBreak \n3:30 – 4:30 pm\nInna Zakharevich\, Cornell\nTitle: “The category of schemes is abelian” and other obviously-false true statements\nAbstract: The category of schemes is clearly not abelian\, as\, for example\, there is no additive structure on the hom-sets of the category. However\, from the perspective of algebraic K-theory\, there turn out to be many respects in which the category of schemes behaves akin to an abelian category. In this talk we will discuss the notion of an “ACGW category\,” which is a generalizations of abelian categories which allows us to use the methods of abelian categories inside the category of schemes. In particular\, we will prove Quillen’s d\’evissage for ACGW-categories and explain implications of this to analyses inside combinatorial K-theory. \n  \nSaturday\, November 7\, 2026\n8:30–9:00 am\nBreakfast \n9:00 – 10:00 am\nAndrew Blumberg\, Columbia\ntba \n10:00 – 10:15 am\nBreak \n10:15 – 11:15 am\nSoren Galatius\, Columbia\ntba \n11:15 – 11:30 am\nBreak \n11:30 am– 12:00 pm\nAlexandra Ballow\, Montana State University\nTitle: Derived Turaev-Viro\nAbstract: We aim to integrate a 2-category over a (framed) surface: this is a purely combinatorial implementation of factorization homology. We will discuss intuitively what factorization homology is\, focusing first on a combinatorial definition of factorization homology over the circle. This example is interesting in its own right as a generalized Hochschild homology. To extend this definition to surfaces\, we define 2-dimensional quivers and consider representations of such in a 2-category. We finish with a discussion of string-nets to motivate the correspondence between factorization homology of a surface and a version of the TQFT Turaev-Viro on surfaces. \n12:00 – 1:30 pm\nBreak \n1:30 – 2:00 pm\nShubhankar Sahai\, UCSD\nTitle: Tannakian reconstruction in derived algebraic geometry\nAbstract: In the early 2010s\, Lurie\, Bhatt and Bhatt–Halpern-Leistner (building on a ‘relative’ perspective introduced by Lurie a decade earlier) proved strong reconstruction results for maps of spectral stacks from (certain) symmetric monoidal functors between their derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves. Motivated by recent work in p-adic Hodge theory and Hochschild homology\, one asks whether such reconstruction results exist in derived geometry\, where the basic geometric objects are spectra of animated (i.e. simplicial commutative) rings rather than E_\infty-rings. In this talk we will explain how to answer this question positively using the recently invented Theta-categories of Nuiten–Toën. This is joint work with Joshua Mundinger. \n2:00 – 2:15 pm\nBreak \n2:15 – 3:15 pm\nNick Rozenbluym\, University of Toronto\nTitle: Categorical representations and higher traces\nAbstract: I will give an overview of the theory of categorical representations of algebraic groups and relate them to ordinary representations via higher categorical trace. This procedure allows to extract concrete consequences of higher structures. For instance\, I will explain how the theory of iterated traces applied to an appropriate (∞\,3)-category gives a conceptual proof of a character formula for Deligne-Lusztig representations of finite groups of Lie type. This is joint work with D. Gaitsgory and Y. Varshavsky.

SUMMARY:Recent developments in super geometry
DESCRIPTION:Geometry and Mathematical Physics Seminar \nSpeaker: Ron Donagi\, University of Pennsylvania \nTitle: Recent developments in super geometry \nAbstract: String theory leads naturally to consideration of Super Riemann surfaces and their super moduli spaces. Much of the classical theory of curves and their moduli\, e.g. existence of a Deligne-Mumford compactification\, has natural super-analogues. But a number of new features arise\, e.g. there are two distinct analogues of a marked point: Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond punctures. We will explore this analogy and emphasize some of the new features\, such as non-projectedness\, the super Schottky problem\, and the super measure.

SUMMARY:On the emergence of representational geometry from the statistics of natural language
DESCRIPTION:New Technologies in Mathematics Seminar \nSpeaker: Yasaman Bahri (Google DeepMind) \nTitle: On the emergence of representational geometry from the statistics of natural language \nAbstract: Large language models organize their internal representations into rich geometric structures that mirror the concepts of natural language. For example\, categorical concepts often map to linear directions\, while words and phrases having a notion of space or time trace out winding manifolds. Remarkably\, these geometries emerge across diverse settings despite differences in neural architecture and training algorithms. Further\, this representational structure is key to understanding how models perform computations. What is the origin of this universal geometry? We turn to simpler models of language — classic word embedding methods — to shed light on this question. We develop a theoretical framework for the co-occurrence statistics of natural language whose predictions show striking agreement with empirical findings. Our work provides a unified explanation for prior observations of representational geometry and a rigorous foundation for further theoretical development.

SUMMARY:Can Math Mend a Broken Heart?
DESCRIPTION:CMSA Q&A Seminar \nSpeaker: Wes Cain\, Harvard \nTitle: Can Math Mend a Broken Heart? \nAbstract: I will discuss an abnormal cardiac rhythm known as T-wave alternans\, and a simple feedback control method (time-delay autosynchronization\, TDAS) that has been used successfully to suppress alternans experimentally. Variants of TDAS have been used for chaos control and prevention of period-doubling bifurcation in physical systems. I will explain how basic ideas from dynamical systems (e.g.\, the contraction mapping principle and Lyapunov functions) can be used to explore the robustness of TDAS. \n  \n
