SUMMARY:Large Hypercubes
DESCRIPTION:AI for the Working Mathematician \nSpeaker: Jordan Ellenberg\, University of Wisconsin-Madison \nTitle: Large Hypercubes \nAbstract: I’ll talk about this paper: Bruhat intervals that are large hypercubes <arxiv.org/abs/2601.01235> in which we use a tool from Google\, AlphaEvolve\, to discover unexpected combinatorial structures inside the symmetric group (to be precise\, a large hypercube in the Bruhat order.) I’ll talk about why this problem was a good fit for this particular machine learning protocol\, which is a bit different from the most popular prevailing approaches. And I’ll also just talk about this large hypercube\, which is interesting in its own right!

SUMMARY:CMSA Q&A Seminar: Discussion on OpenAI Math Papers
DESCRIPTION:CMSA Q&A Seminar \nTitle: Discussion on OpenAI Math Papers \nAbstract: You have likely seen that OpenAI released 722 math papers. For the Q&A meeting on Wednesday October 14\, we would like to gather to discuss them and hear informal\, short presentations (say 10 minutes maximum) from anyone who is engaging with at least one of the papers released by OpenAI. If any of the papers cover a subject you care about and you can take a look at it\, we would particularly like to hear your thoughts on: \n\n\n\nIs the mathematics correct?\nAre there truly new or creative ideas?\nIs there adequate and accurate citation of previous work?\nWhat is the quality of the exposition?\n\nWe hope to have lots of back-and-forth between the presenters and the audience. \nIf you know of an OpenAI paper that you would like to say a few words about\, please let us know. It would be great to have a list of people who would like to speak. We hope to see everyone there.\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Prove2Me: Formalizing Fermat Last Theorem and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:New Technologies in Mathematics Seminar \nSpeaker: Tianyi Peng\, Decision\, Risk\, and Operations Division\, Columbia Business School \nTitle: Prove2Me: Formalizing Fermat Last Theorem and Beyond \nAbstract: Proof assistants such as Lean 4 promise the paradigm of formally verified mathematics\, but large-scale formalization projects have faced major barriers to entry\, including the need for expertise in formal verification (as well as the underlying mathematics) and the significant time required for writing formal proofs. AI coding agents have dramatically reduced these barriers; human users can now use natural language to prompt agents to write complex proofs in Lean. This opens up the intriguing possibility of internet-scale mathematical collaboration involving both humans and AI agents\, where correctness is machine-checked.

SUMMARY:First Proof Batch 3: Mathematicians putting AI to the test
DESCRIPTION:AI for the Working Mathematician \nSpeaker: Lauren Williams\, Harvard \nTitle: First Proof Batch 3: Mathematicians putting AI to the test \nAbstract: First Proof is an initiative that aims to obtain a nuanced\, objective assessment about the capabilities of large language models to prove specified mathematical statements. I will report on the results of First Proof’s third batch of problems. We will be scoring AI-generated solutions based on (1) mathematical correctness\, (2) quality of exposition\, and (3) quality of attributions.

SUMMARY:A tale of two Lie groups
DESCRIPTION:Geometry and Mathematical Physics Seminar \nSpeaker: Spiro Karigiannis\, University of Waterloo \nTitle: A tale of two Lie groups \nAbstract: The classical Lie group SO(4) is well-known to possess a very rich structure\, relating in several ways to complex Euclidean spaces. This structure can be used to construct the classical twistor space Z over an oriented Riemannian 4-manifold M\, which is a 6-dimensional almost Hermitian manifold. Special geometric properties of Z are then related to the curvature of M\, an example of which is the celebrated Atiyah-Hitchin-Singer Theorem. The Lie group Spin(7) is a particular subgroup of SO(8) determined by a special 4-form. Inriguingly\, Spin(7) has several properties relating to complex Euclidean spaces which are direct analogues of SO(4) properties\, but sadly (or interestingly\, depending on your point of view) not all of them. I will give a leisurely introduction to both groups in parallel\, emphasizing the similarities and differences\, and show how we can nevertheless at least partially succeed in constructing a “twistor space” over an 8-dimensional manifold equipped with a torsion-free Spin(7)-structure. (I will define what those are.) This is joint work with Michael Albanese\, Lucía Martín-Merchán\, and Aleksandar Milivojevic. \n  \n

SUMMARY:What is a self-concordant barrier function?\, and what is an accelerated first-order algorithm?  (ICM Series: On the work of Yurii Nesterov)
DESCRIPTION:CMSA Q&A Seminar \nSpeaker: Robert M. Freund\, MIT \nTitle: What is a self-concordant barrier function?\, and what is an accelerated first-order algorithm?  (ICM Series: On the work of Yurii Nesterov) \nAbstract: The two most impactful contributions of Nesterov on both theory and computation in optimization are (i) self-concordant barriers for interior-point methods in convex optimization\, and (ii) accelerated first-order methods for convex optimization. My own research in continuous optimization – and indeed my perspective on the field of mathematical optimization — has been profoundly impacted by Nesterov. In this talk I aim to explain these two contributions – self-concordant barriers and accelerated first-order methods – and how they have fundamentally improved optimization both computationally and theoretically. \n  \n  \n
